As Sarah Gottesman notes in A Brief History of Color in Art, Joseph Mallord William Turner was mocked for his his choice of palette. The choice yellow hues prompted critics to claim his his images were "afflicted with jaundice."
The painter preferred a watercolor derived from the urine of mango-fed cows called Indian Yellow, as well as a brighter synthetic Chrome Yellow - a lead-based pigment known to cause delirium.
